Jerry Doell was born in 1938, north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm. Jerry showed an early interest in drawing. In school he'd sketch the things around him: the snowy fields he'd crossed that morning, the horse-drawn sleigh which stood tethered to a post outside the classroom window, the wood-burning stove that staved off the bitter cold. These quintessential moments of childhood and wistful daydreams on paper, would blend with the stories his grandfather would tell about earlier times, all but forgotten.
To earn a little pocket money, young Jerry carved toy horses and sleighs out of apple boxes and sold them to neighbors. Jerry's interest in art and music was influenced by an uncle whose sense of humour and passions for drawing, carving and music would leave an indelible mark. Unfortunately, Jerry's uncle died at age 13. Jerry continued to listen to music and from it's fusion of rhythm and harmonies grew an intense desire to recreate in his own way the sounds and sights around him. Fortunate to have an active imagination and God-given talent, Jerry could, with remarkable warmth, share a feeling, a mood, and a setting through music or drawings. Jerry decided to pursue the life of a musician, and travelled as a singer, songwriter and guitarist for 10 years. In 1968, however, Jerry decided upon a different path, which lead him to a career in painting. With fervour, he poured himself into his work. Vivid childhood memories and scenes of the old west resurfaced on canvas as nostaligc oil paintings. Jerry Doell is a story-telling artist. He invites the viewer to reminisce with him and share the experience he is painting. His art is meant to be felt as well as seen. A romantic at heart, Jerry sees beauty in ordinary things: a rose, a violin, a sheet of music, the soft light of a kerosene lamp. Expressed in each painting is an honesty and a simplicity that reflect the artist's beautiful humbleness of spirit. Through his artwork, Jerry has brought fond memories to life and recorded history in colour. As a mature artist, Jerry has nurtured the human need to remember the good. His paintings have received an overwhelming response both locally and internationally. In his own words, Jerry describes his art:
Jerry has worked diligently to reflect the serenity and purity of Nature, and to preserve our heritage, the heartbeat and breath of our past. Each painting tells a story, unchanged by time, undiluted by trends. Ageless. Alive. |
